  • Locally made hair products
    • Challenge for local service providers (like hair stylists) is that they can’t get locally produced products - re: Kawartha Loon
    • Sweet Song (sweetsong.ca) - Lakefield, at Ptbo farmers market - 150 year old recipes - shampoo/conditioner, skin creams, from flowers and herbs collected locally (wildcrafted)
  • Survivalist wiki - how to start a wiki
    • wikispaces is a site where you can build your own wiki if you don’t want to download software like MediaWiki and run your own server as is done for this site.
    • May try Pearltrees - bookmarking site
    • become a society of users not producers…bank of survivalist info is necessary
  • Soldering LED lights for urban farming and indoor, year-round food production (e.g. vertical farming in dense urban spaces where there’s little vacant land, as in Singapore, Milan, Chicago, etc.)
    • how to build larger light systems, lead workshops and tutorials
    • cost to buy (expensive) vs. cost to make (cheap) - are there local business opportunities?
    • LED system manufacturer in St. Catherines, Ontario
  • a mile in their cues
    • maybe a smart phone app or twitter post
    • sprung from PSH’s role in ‘Synecdoche New York’ given instructions for life, but realizes that he never received directions
    • each morning you get a ‘cue’ which helps you realize that you need to be patient with people and understand that they have much more going on than is often realized
    • source twitter for cues
    • post secret as an example
  • investing for retirement - local opportunities and micro-financing
    • Foundation matches wealthy with projects, but what about other types of investment? How do we mobilize similar model for ‘regular’ folks? Differs from Kickstarter because its local. Doesn’t have to be on-line. Canvass or solicit on the streets? Grassroots, people level.
    • Would COIN be a good partner for this typw of investment scheme
    • the Triple E Trust - project of Kawartha Loon that focuses on micro-financing
    • the Benefit Corporation - new class of corporate entity that focuses on social benefits
  • ideas on waste
    • composting worms bypass methane production at the dump, when half our waste stream is organic waste that is trucked away and buried.
    • the GreenUP Store provides contacts for buying red wrigglers
    • community compost - shared waste
    • community leaf compost location (private property is an option)
    • half number of miles by taking waste and recycling to one side of the street
    • project to collect and reclaim veg oil from restaurants in town (GTA/LakeONT has service, but too expensive to collect in PTBO)
    • Durham collects used oil locally and powers town vehicles
    • COIN helped start-up a bio-diesel company but person heading it left town and the biz stopped with it
  • idea on minimum wage
    • minimum wage tied to cost of living, what happens when it fall
    • guaranteed income - living wage - Australia, Norway - many US cities too (Idaho, Wyoming, Rhodes Island)
    • welfare system requires high costs to run - redistribute to livable wage

Carry forward to next meeting
