Cider
Sept 2010 Cider from scratch project
September 15th, you are to acquire 1 gallon of pure apple juice and bring it to the meeting. Santa Cruz (glass) and Sun Rype (plastic) seem to be the two popular brands in town. I’ll go through a quick lesson on how to convert that into cider. After that, we’ll figure out how to make apple juice from scratch using locally sourced apples and building a press. If you’d like to do some homework, find out 1) where we can source apples locally 2) easiest way to make a food safe press that will work with apples.
== Feb 2009 Yeast Sampling project == COMPLETE
As agreed at the last meeting, this week we will begin our cider/yeast project. It will cost approximately $20/person, and in one month you’ll have two gallons of hard cider.
We’ll be meeting at my house before this week’s meeting to pitch (put in) the yeast.
Our plan? To get 2 - 1 gallons of apple juice each, and 2 different yeasts. We’ll pitch them all at the same time, and keep them at the same temperature.
I will measure them with a hydrometer every day for one month, documenting the results. At the end of that, we will graph the results and post them on hackepedia.org’s cider page.
