We are going to look into what it takes to do a "pirate drive-in", where we will pick a wall and play a movie on it with a projector, and have the audio playing on FM. We hope to do this intially in Victoria, BC, Canada.

Plan

  • Determine legality of playing movies to the public (which are permitted, if there are loopholes (if we don’t charge, if it’s on one of our house walls etc))
  • Figure out the legality of broadcast FM for the audio transmissions (one thing we discussed is two simultaneous audio tracks on different FM frequencies)
    • As far as I am concern this does not qualify as fair use. What about some Free Open Source Movies? There is this movie called Project New London that looks so great and ‘bout to release. There are also many short movies that surely will entertain some people.
  • Find a good wall to use
  • Pick a movie
  • Determine how to notify people
  • Try a test run
  • Movie time

Audio

RIC-40 from Industry Canada

Wireless low power devices from Industry Canada

It seems a BETS-1 capable radio under 1mw would be legal.

Selling packaged snacks/pop or if someone has a licensed food cart recreate the classic drive in burger joint. Servers on roller skates/roller blades? A way to help cover equipment or permit costs.
