Discussions
DIY Water
Issues: is there a way to test the amount of metals and ions in water in a cost effective user friendly way? In particular, some people who brew their own beer or use municipal water for domestic projects may be concerned about water issues that are readily measured with the right equipment.
- Water testing toolkit where crowd results can be geotagged
- What are the existing water tests an individual can purchase?
- Does DataBC have a list of water quality test results?
- What can a DIY water test – test?
- Published today: SMITHERS - First Nations, industry and members of the public can now access science-based information on water supply in the northwest region of B.C. with the release of the Northwest Water Tool, a leading edge, GIS-based program that supports decision-making on water use planning and approvals.
- The drinkable book
- Lab on a chip
- Test kits for hikers/campers being refitted for urban water supplies?
- Colour testing kits used by UNICEF, WaterAid and others
- Citizen science â can citizens aid in monitoring and understanding water quality?
- Open data and water â what information is presently available?
- Waterly
- Many water testing products are available over the counter or could be assembled using over the counter products
- Cost may be an issue
- Quality and accuracy concerns
Kale
Issues: whatâs the deal with Kale?
- Aggregate Nutrient Density Index (ANDI, see Dr. Joel Fuhrman) reflects the expected nutritious intake of certain foods â includes nutrient profiles to help select nutritious foods
- High ANDI foods: strawberries, kale, bok choy among others have the highest levels of aggregate nutrient density (ANDI food scores)
- ANDI is not particularly useful when seeking specific nutrients, but is useful as a general guideline
-
Kale and other dark greens may have too many oxalates for some people â super foods may not always be ideal for every condition
- Health Canada’s How much food you need every day guide
Sustainability and elections
Issue: public services do not have adaptable and legible funding mechanisms (unlike other countries, i.e. Japan, USA, UK etc.). Higher orders of governments (provincial, federal) provide funding for projects, but the funding doesnât always have a clear process for allocation and often important public services compete for funding against dissimilar projects, cities of different sizes compete for the same funding, or funding is provided on an ad hoc basis. How do we make this an important issue in the up coming election?
- Ideas on lessons from bitcoin as a model for governance (i.e. block chain)
- Use of public debates to set the stage has worked on other issues (i.e. aid) â but for an issue that requires public spotlight what can we learn from other tools to fix the conversation in the public eye?
- Change vs. transformation in public service processes
- Discussion on âcommunity of placeâ
- how do community discussions take place on other issues, like planning applications?
- This could be a parallel idea for further discussion.
Social Network
Issue: how do people connect online to build community and find likeminded individuals to connect with? Idea: develop a social networking site that uses news to connect likeminded people on topics of interest, and then allow them to engage on a variety of other topics too.
- Use of political affiliation mapping to sort
- Debate and discuss channels for people to peruse depending on their inclination
- Q: does this lead to silo-ing like how googleâs matching algorithms creates silos and echo chambers?
- How does such a site enable connections without siloing?
- Filters and opt in / opt out controls will be in the hands of users
- Use of language: little endian and big endian to explore the issue
- Can this site be used to enrich understanding of political associative behaviour?
- Can the site use news as a launch pad for integration and conversation?
- Aggregation of content is based on the users defined preferences
- The site would include cohort management tools to build groups with just the people the user would like to
- Key idea: digitizing the party and helping people find the part folks theyâd like to be with
Public Art â colours and light
Idea: use unique paint and patterns to create art that only appears under certain conditions (i.e. when a bike map passes over it, if someone is colour blind, when a red light shines on it)
- Discussed different tools and processes that could be used to create desired optical illusions and effects
Closing
- Discussion on peopleâs writing habits (everyone at the meeting writes in some way shape or form)
- Kris to send doodle out for November time slot
- Patrick to help select venue/facilitate
